Enchanting Rare Roro Arja Operetta

An Interesting Collaboration of Kid ArtistsAre children today only able to play? Oh.... it’s not entirely correct. Have a look at their action in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) XXXVI at the Bali Art Center. For a whole month (Jun 13 to Jul 12), they make expressions in some art programs. Some are involved in the opening parade, staging to competition or parade.
Many people recognize the portion of children is very small, but children are still able to show off an interesting and artistic creativity. Bali Kite Festival in Sanur

Type: Festival
The Bali Kite Festival will again be held on the beach of Padang Galak near Sanur from 18th – 20th June, 2014.
Hundreds of Kites – some as large as a truck or a bus – will be sent flown by teams of young men assembling from banjars across Bali to compete with other kites lovingly assembled over the weeks leading up to the event.
Technical meetings between the competing teams are now underway to socialize the rules governing the three categories of kite and guidelines to enhance the safety of participants and spectators alike.
Colourful teams in obligatory Balinese dress have become a staple event on Bali’s calendar.
Open to the public, but be warned that Jalan Bypass becomes a very busy road during this time. Some kites take up more than the width of 1 lane, situated on the back of trucks.
Accompanying them are scores of team members on their motor-bikes, some with sirens warning of their approach. Sanur really becomes a festive town for this annual event.
Watch the skies from Benoa to Ketewel daily from now to see practice runs. These must surely be the biggest kites in the world. Any volunteers to prove us wrong? Do the Thailanders have bigger ones?

Four Unique Tourist Attractions in Gianyar

Four Unique Tourist Attractions in GianyarPegulingan Temple, Tirta Empul, Mengening and Gunung Kawi are tourist attractions offering the uniqueness of their own. The four tourist attractions are located in Tampaksiring, Gianyar County, perching in the same path to Kintamani tourist attraction, Bangli. They pose a spiritual tourist center with their own advantages, so they are not only visited by Hindus to worship, but also by domestic to foreign travelers. Other than offering convenience to seek peace, those temples also become the center of research and historical objects. At Pegulingan Temple, for example, the sanctum located at Basangambu hamlet, Manukaya village, is synonymous with Buddhism and Hinduism acculturation. The temple retains a lot of ancient relics, such as octagonal stupa, panca datu, Buddha statues and Shivaitic yoni.
There is also a rock stone box containing clay seal that outlining the spells of Mahayana Buddhism. Existence of such high-value objects caused the Pegulingan Temple to become one of the national cultural heritages and world cultural heritages. Preservation of the historic objects could create the tourist attraction into a spiritual object and archaeological tourist destination. As they are closely located, having visited the Pegulingan Temple travelers usually resume their visit to Tirta Empul Temple. It is really a spiritual tourist center since the days of yesteryear. Hindu community in Bali often takes advantage of the springs as a water source for melukat or purificatory rite. Since this place becomes a tourist center, many foreign travelers also do the same. Every full moon, new moon, Kliwon (fifth day in five-day week) or other Hindu holy days, the temple having a shower is always thronged by pilgrims wishing to do purificatory rite. It is said the holy spring emerged during the battle between Lord Indra and the evil king named Mayadenawa.
At that time, Mayadenawa escaped by tilting his legs in order not to be known by Lord Indra, so the place was then named Tampaksiring. In his hideaway, Mayadenawa poisoned the water which was then drunk by the troops of Lord Indra. As a result, the troops were killed. On knowing this, Lord Indra then plugged something into the ground that sprang fresh water taken advantage as antidote. The spring was then known as Tirta Empul. The first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Sukarno, made the presidential palace in the west of the sacred area. On that account, the palace area also became an interesting tourist attraction.
Still in the region, there is Mangening Temple becoming one of the cultural heritages. It is situated at Saraseda village having cool and tranquil natural ambience. To get there, visitors must down the stairs. The temple area is very beautiful because it has some ponds with crystal clear water. In the main part of the temple, there are three-tiered meru shrine where lingam-yoni statue was discovered. At the outermost courtyard lies a landscaping garden with five showers, while in the middle courtyard can be found buildings like gamelan pavilion, kulkul pavilion, pegambahan pavilion and pegat pavilion. Another unique spiritual tourist attraction is Gunung Kawi. It is located at Penaka hamlet denoting a cultural heritage of Bali. Uniquely, it has carved temples on ravine rock. The object serves to glorify the spirit of King Udayana and his family. Gunung Kawi stands next to Pakerisan River, a sacred tributary flowing from the mountain in the north. There are ten large niches with carved stone shrine, which is said to be the tombs of the kings and their consorts. In terms of design, it strongly reflects the influence of Indian culture.

Travelers Get Fascinated by Balinese Dance

Travelers Get Fascinated by Balinese DanceTravelers making a visit to Ulun Danu Beratan are very lucky. They will not only see the beauty of the lake, but also witness the presentation of the art and culture through the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival. Indeed, the festival officially opened by the Regent of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti will last for three months (Jun 16 to Aug 3, 2014) and displays local arts by each customary village at Baturiti in turn.
The art performance is only made every Saturday, Sunday and national holidays. Well, on June 5-6, the Baturiti and Kembang Merta customary village presented some dazzling traditional dances such as the Baris Tunggal, Oleg Tamulilingan, Margapati, Cendrawasih, Jauk Manis, Topen Tua and Kebyar Duduk. Since the presentation of the dance started, visitors instantly came to throng the arena.
Domestic and foreign travelers did not want to miss out such beautiful moment. They directly immortalized the arts through their camera. Even, many travelers ‘kidnapped’ the dancers to pose together with the beautiful backdrop of Lake Beratan and Ulun Danu Temple. “Well, may I take a picture with the dancers?” said one of Japanese travelers in stammering Bahasa Indonesia.
Operations Manager of the Ulun Danu tourist attraction, I Wayan Mustika, said the art festival was held to attract travelers as well as promote and preserve the local traditional arts. This year’s festival took the theme ‘Kerta Danu: through the Ulun Danu Beratan Art Festival II We Improve the Awareness of the Arts as Featured Tourist Destination.’
The festival presented various types of local arts, ranging from classical gamelan music to sacred dances packed for the performing arts. In addition to dances, the festival also featured okokan, gong and classical angklung gamelan music. Then, it was also enlivened by dozens of artists from the United States. “This biennial festival held at the venue with famous lakeside temple is intended to increase tourism income, so that the welfare of local people also increases,” he said.
Experience of the last year’s festival, explained Mustika, showed the increase in tourist arrivals and the income generated amounted to IDR 9 billion. He expected the current festival also increased the visitors. In 2014, his party dared to set a target of IDR 10 billion with 600,000 visitors. “We are optimistic the current festival will achieve the target. Mystical Charms of Temples on Serangan Island

Mystical Charms of Temples on Serangan IslandGet accustomed to strolling to Serangan Island? Serangan Island or Turtle Island strategically located in the South of Sanur Beach, in fact, has a unique mystery. Precisely, it sits around the Pat Payung Temple, Pesalakan Temple, Dalem Ped and Dalem Beji located in the southern part of the island.
Reputedly, the region is inhabited by supernatural beings. The atmosphere resembles a forest overgrown by mangrove trees and other local trees. It is guarded by officers and no people’s home occurs around the location, so that its beauty remains to be well maintained. The road nearby is still unpaved and sometimes muddy in rainy season.
Atmosphere of the road is deserted, so that sometimes it makes people misguided. Once entering this area, visitors will feel thick aura. Talking about supernatural beings, our body will instantly feel cold and the chilling creeps. However, such a nuance will sometimes vanish when hearing the entertaining bird songs on the trees around us.
Jero Mangku Ketut Sudiarsa said the four temples had the energy and were guarded by supernatural beings. No one was allowed to say rudely, carry pork and spit carelessly. Otherwise, it would bring in calamities like accidents, illness and other obstacles. Specifically in the area of Dalem Jawa Temple, if someone would like to salute the Muslim community Asalamwalaikum, it would be answered. Bugis society (local Islamic community) often saw people wearing caps and hoods who were praying there.
In terms of supernatural realm, Serangan people believed in the area of the Dalem Jawi Temple sat a golden dome mosque. “Once upon a time, there was an incident where Bugis people at sea saw people saying prayers. So, they came ashore and joined the prayers. Having realized, they in fact said prayers on a tree,” said Jro Mangku Sudiarsa.
The temple areas were also guarded by officers like in the real world. There were police, soldiers, generals and all kinds of forces existing in the real world. The guards would be visible when people came with bad intention. “In the past, there were some people running into people’s home because they encountered a lot of soldiers,” said Jro Mangku.
According to Jro Mangku Sudiarsa, each temple was guarded by astral beings as guardian of the temples in charge of maintaining the balance on the earth. Pesalakan Temple located in the north was guarded by astral beings; Dalem Ped was guarded by big and scary creatures, while Dalem Jawi Temple was guarded by Walisongo (nine Ulemas).
If one’s intention was good, the deities abiding at Pat Payung Temple was also generous. If people would like to invoke something, it would be sincerely approved. Therefore, if residents of Serangan would like to organize a ritual they would always offer pejati oblation in order the ritual could run smoothly. “People who would hold a grandiose ritual such as nyekah, ngadakan pedasaran and ngenteg linggih will definitely invoke holy water as safeguarding against negative attacks. It also includes the rain stopping,” he said.
Jro Mangku Sudiarsa said that Pat Payung Temple was also a place to invoke medicine. Of course, it should be begun with presenting pejati oblation. After getting revelation, Jro Mangku would take anything in the temple area to be used as medicine. “The deity is generous, provided that it is based on sacred mind,” he explained.
Pat Payung Temple was formerly a swagina temple or temple of profession and a sanctum to invoke a healing substance and promotion at workplace. Since the piodalan or temple anniversary fell every six months, exactly on Tumpek Uye, many healers and shamans came to say prayers. “Then, if the people of Serangan will hold a match or competition they will definitely invoke safety at this temple because he will surely protect his people,” he concluded.

Taman Ayun Temple at Central Badung

As the Royal Family temple of the Raja of Mengwi

Taman AyunPura Taman Ayun is a beautifully apointed temple, with its own surrounding moat, in the village at Mengwi, Badung Regency, 18 Km. West of Denpasar. The history of this temple is closely associated with the begining of the Rajadom of Mengwi, in 1627 B.C. it was built in 163-1AD. at the time at the rule of the first Raja of Mengwi. I Gusti Agung Ngurah Made Agung, who later become known as Ida Cokorda Sakti Belambangan. As the Royal Family temple of the Raja of Mengwi. This temple is a place to worship the Royal ancestors, who find their rest in a special shrine known as the "Gedong Paibon".
Following the Pattern of most Balinese temples, Pura Taman Ayun has three connecting temple yards. The innermost sanctum is knows- as "Utama Mandala" (the highest circle), the middle yard as. "Madia Mandala" (the circle in between) and the outer as "Nista Mandala" (the humblest circle). The enter the main sanctum one must pass through a raised Gate- way, known as the Kori Agung (Paduraksa), and the gate- way between the outer and middle connect in a split gate, known as "Candi Bentar".
Apart from the "Gedong Paibon", dedicated to one ancestor, the middle courtyard are other shrines dedicated to the various main temples of Bali. These shrines were built by the 5 Raja to ensure that his Kingdom and people would be able to share in the prosperity and fertility of the nation, and also to enable all the people at Mengwi; to conduct the religious ceremonies at the temple, such as "meajar-ajar", memendak sang Pitara" and to request holy water to protect the rice fields from pestilence, etc.
There is also another shrine on the middle courtyard dedicated to the "Pasek Badak" famous here of by gone days from the Raja’s troops. The extensive temple grounds of Taman Ayun also function as a resting place for the Royal family. Covering 4 Hectares of land. The temple is surrounded by a large most, which used to be full of loins and lily flowers of all color, and around the edges of the moat can be found frangipani, cempaka, kenanga & other pcrftiined flowering trees, as well as mango stein, durian, manggo   rambutan fruit trees.
The temple has always been strongly influenced by the ups and downs at the Raja dom of Mengwi. ln l890 here was a war between the Rajas of Badung and Mengwi, and the I0 th. Raja Mengwi "I Gusti Made Agung" lost the battle, and had to retreat to escape with life in to the bordering eastern district. During the rule of the victorious Raja of Badung the temple was never looked after properly, and the temple buildings deteriorated due to lack of care.
ln the year 1911 AD, part of the Royal Family returned to their family seat at Mengwi, and Pura Taman Ayun was restored. However on 20 th, January 1917 a violent earth-quake damaged many of the existing buildings. Repairs have been done in stages to return the temple to its original condition.
The odalan at Pura Taman Ayun falls every 2l0 days on a day known as "Selasa Kliwon Wuku Mendangsia". Many tourists used to visit the temple, even, before the Second world War.  The family of Puri Gede Mengwi still maintain the temple. Assisted by a committee made up of the lokal traditional leaders, such as the village officials from the Mengwi District.

Tumpek Landep A Moment for Purification of Ancestral Heritages

Tumpek Landep is celebrated every Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Wuku Landep. The phrase Tumpek Landep is derived from the word tumpek meaning close and landep meaning sharp. So, in the philosophical context, Tumpek Landep poses a milestone of sharpening the citta, buddhi and manas (mind). Therefore, people always behave according to clarity of mind with the foundation of religious values. With a pure mind, devotees will be able to pick and choose what is good and bad.
Tumpek Landep poses veneration to Lord Shiva Pasupati as the god of taksu or divine inspiration. So, after celebrating the Sarasvati Day as the coming down of science, people invoke in order the science will be auspicious or gives sharpness of mind and heart. On the Tumpek Landep is also performed a cleansing and purification ritual to different ancestral heritages such as keris dagger, spears and so forth. Layman often considers it the anniversary of iron or metal. However, over the period, the meaning of Tumpek Landep increasingly deviates from the true meaning.
Now, the community even tends to interpret the Tumpek Landep as a ceremony for motorcycles, cars and equipment made from the iron works. Indeed, this is very much distorted. It is okay to perform a ritual on Tumpek Landep to motorcycles, cars and working equipment, but do not forget the core of implementation of Tumpek Landep itself so that people always remember to sharpen their mind (manas), buddhi and citta. By doing so, people are expected to fight against ignorance, darkness and misery. Ritual of Tumpek Landep actually reminds people of always sharpening the mind so as to suppress the evil behavior within the self.
In terms of the meaning of feast day, the ritual to motorcycles, cars or working equipment is more appropriately carried out on Tumpek Kuningan, namely as a thanksgiving for the facility gift of Supreme God. Hopefully, the facilities can help the activities and function well and safely. Tumpek Landep poses a milestone for introspection to improve the character pursuant to religious teachings.
On Tumpek Landep, devotees should do worship in family shrine as well as in temple to invoke the blessing of Lord Shiva Pasupati to be given the sharpness of mind so that we can become a useful person to society. It is also resumed with the cleaning and purification of the ancestral heritages. For the artists, Tumpek Landep is celebrated as a worship to invoke divine inspiration so the art becomes more developed, gains an appreciation from the community and ability to convey a moral and intellectual messages to educate people.
Again, it is affirmed that Tumpek Landep is not ritual for motorcycles, cars, furniture or iron, but it is more about the awareness of always sharpening the mind for the welfare of mankind. It’s okay to give ritual to motorcycles, cars and so forth as a form of gratitude, but it is only the additional value. Do not let the celebration focuses on the added values, but forget the basic core of the celebration. (BTN/ist/015)
